WHAT TO WEAR FOR A NEWBORN SESSION

This is the most frequently asked question from parents-to-be — so let’s talk wardrobe!

Your Connection Is the Star 🌟

One of my favourite parts of a newborn session is capturing the bond between you and your baby. Those intimate, skin-to-skin moments make for the most timeless and emotionally rich images — the kind you’ll cherish forever.

That said, if skin-to-skin isn’t your style, no worries! There are plenty of beautiful alternatives.

Outfit Tips for Mum & Dad

For Mum:

  • Tops: Strappy vest or loose-fitting tank in nude, beige, grey, or soft black. Stick to light, solid colours — avoid patterns.

  • Dresses: Long, neutral-toned dresses are lovely and add a soft, flowing feel to the session.

  • Make-up & Nails: Keep make-up natural and nails clean or lightly polished in neutral shades.

  • Extras: Bring a hairbrush to tame any flyaways.

For Dad:

  • Tops: A snug, plain v-neck t-shirt or a light, casual button-up shirt (sleeves you can roll up work best).

  • Bottoms: Well-fitting jeans.

  • Tip: Coordinate with Mum’s outfit — keep tones in the same family for a cohesive look.

Colour Palette Advice

I’m a big fan of neutrals — beige, taupe, ivory, soft greys, and muted browns. These tones feel cosy and timeless, and they age beautifully.

If there’s a dominant colour in your home (especially in the room where your photos will be displayed), let me know in advance. I’ll tailor the set and tones to complement your décor.

What to Leave at Home

  • Loud logos or slogans

  • Bright colours or bold patterns

  • Statement jewellery, chunky watches, hoop earrings

These elements tend to draw attention away from your baby — and we want them to stay centre stage!

Most Important: Be Comfortable

There’s no need to squeeze into something that doesn’t feel like you. If you’re uncomfortable, it will show in the images. These photos are for you, and you should feel confident and relaxed in every shot.

Still unsure? Email me a snapshot of your clothing options at maggie@dinkyfeet.co.uk and I’ll be happy to guide you.
